With the premiere of the highly anticipated New Moon movie dated for November 20, expectations were set high. It was just a year ago that most fans were disappointed as the first Twilight movie didn’t match up to the success of the books.
“I was really disappointed by how [director] Catherine Hardwickie did Twilight; the way she pieced Twilight together was not what I expected. I think a lot of other Twilight fanatics agree with me on this,” says senior Talia Kugler. This time around, the movie took a new approach through director, Chris Weitz. Fans anticipated Weitz’s style of directing in comparison to the first movie. Weitz brought a very different directing style to New Moon, while Hardwickie is constantly full of energy and excitement; her movies reflect a sense of clutter and disorganization. Weitz has a much more laid back directing style to reflect the thought put into his work.
“I think that the style will be different. I think that the acting will feel more real In Twilight the connection between Bella and Edward seemed kind of odd and forced, but I think that in New Moon the relationship between Bella and Jacob will feel more real,” says senior Kelsey Crane.
The excitement that fills the hearts of many young teens was from heart throb Taylor Lautner, who plays the role of Jacob Black. “If you just look at Taylor Lautner, you can't help but not love him.” Kugler says. Throughout the series, most book readers chose Team Edward, but the question is with the New Moon release will fans be making the switch to Team Jacob? For rabid Twilight readers, they will always want Edward and Bella to be together, but through the movies it is hard not to be rooting for Jacob to succeed. There was much speculation going into this movie, in that Lautner was going to be replaced because he was not big enough for the role. Lautner worked out every day to gain about 30 pounds in muscle in order to recapture his role as Jacob, making it even harder for girls not to fawn over his perfectly toned body and good looks as soon as he walks on screen.
You may be hearing rumors that Dakota Fanning will be featured in New Moon, and these rumors are true. Fanning took the role as Jane, a very powerful vampire that has the ability to hurt someone with just a look. One may be concerned with her ability to play the role as well as it is portrayed in the books. Before, we had only seen her in movies like Uptown Girls where she played a child. Is the world ready to see her in a much more mature role than what we are used to from her?
“I feel that if she is a good enough actress, it shouldn’t matter. But one of the things I like about Twilight is that they don’t use big name actors and actresses. By putting Dakota Fanning into the mix, it kind of makes the movie less realistic to me,” says senior Jenny Kolb.
With all the excitement and speculation about the release that has been going on, it hardly seems possible that the movie is finally coming out. This time around, hopefully, after seeing the movie we find fans leaving the theatre completely satisfied as their expectations had been met. “Even though most movies that are made from books suck, I think this one will be good,” says junior Ashleigh Cecil. “Trust me I’ve seen all the trailers there are, even the fan-made ones. From what I saw it’s gonna be great.”
